Classic Tour

Our specialized guides provide a detailed and complete service for visiting the Sassi di Matera. The guide services last 3 hours in order to better understand the characteristics and history of our territory.

Upon request we create tailor made itineraries.

The classic itinerary is the following:

The visit starts from Palazzo Lanfranchi, (1672) with the adjacent Church of Madonna del Carmine. The Palace houses the prestigious Museum of Modern and Medieval Art of Basilicata which presents materials of different origins and types.

Stop at Piazzetta Pascoli, dedicated to the famous poet who taught in Matera at the beginning of his career and breathtaking panoramic view of the Sasso Caveoso district and the overlooking Murgic plateau. Continue through the narrow streets and alleys of Sasso Caveoso where it will be possible to observe the refined restoration of some elegant buildings and peasant houses, until you reach the splendid Piazza San Pietro Caveoso dominated by the church of the same name.

We then visit the “cave house”, a typical house with a mixed structure dug and built and set up with the typical furnishings and tools of the peasant civilization. The guide continues at the fascinating rock church of Santa Lucia alle Malve or Madonna de Idris, where you can observe some of the most significant frescoes of the local iconographic heritage and the elaborate system of architectural decorations made in the cliff.

Return to the Piano area and walk along the Baroque ridge with a stop at the most important churches: Santa Chiara, Church of Purgatory and San Francesco d’Assisi. Visit of the medieval area and the Romanesque Cathedral (currently closed for restoration) at Piazza Duomo with the fascinating panoramic view of the Sasso Barisano.

The guided tour of Matera and the Sassi will allow the visitor to understand the various stages of evolution of the city, from prehistory to the urban evolution of Matera, the period of displacement of the Rioni Sassi and the subsequent inclusion of the city and the Sassi in the lists of UNESCO, as a world heritage site.

Alternatively you can book thematic tours lasting several days, such as the incoming itineraries dedicated to modern architecture in Southern Italy, to UNESCO sites, to the cult of San Nicola, to the typical products of Basilicata or nature trails on the Matera Murgia. For shorter stops we offer guided tours dedicated to Lucanian flavors, cinematic locations, trekking and hiking.
