The visit starts from Palazzo Lanfranchi (1672) with the adjacent Church of Madonna del Carmine. The Palace houses the prestigious Museum of Modern and Medieval Art of Basilicata which presents materials of different origins and typologies including the Levi collection, the D’Errico collection and materials from excavations and findings in the areas surrounding Matera.

Stop at Piazzetta Pascoli, dedicated to the famous poet who taught in Matera at the beginning of his career and breathtaking view of the Rione Sasso Caveoso and the facing Murgia plateau. We continue through the streets and alleys of Sasso Caveoso where it will be possible to observe the refined restoration of some noble palaces and peasant houses, until reaching the splendid Piazza San Pietro Caveoso dominated by the church of the same name.

We then visit the “cave house”, a typical dwelling with a mixed structure excavated and built and furnished with the typical furnishings and tools of peasant civilization. The guide continues to the rock church of Santa Lucia alle Malve and Madonna de Idris, where you can observe some of the most significant frescoes of the local iconographic heritage and the elaborate system of architectural decorations made of rock.

Return to the Piano area and walk along the Baroque ridge with a stop at the most important churches: Santa Chiara, Church of Purgatory and San Francesco d’Assisi. Visit the medieval area and the Romanesque Cathedral in Piazza Duomo with a panoramic view of the Sasso Barisano.
